JONESBORO — A career-high seven tackles and a pick-six has landed Arkansas State University football team’s Cody Brown with this week’s Sun Belt Conference Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week Award as announced this Monday by the conference.
A junior defensive back, Brown helped lead A-State to a 37-27 conference victory over Louisiana-Lafayette this past Tuesday. He returned his third interceptions of the season 30 yards for a touchdown to put A-State ahead 27-0 early in the second quarter.. Brown, who has now picked off a pass in three consecutive games, led an A-State defense that limited Ragin’ Cajuns quarterback Jalen Nixon to just 17-of-44 passing on the night.
His final tackle of the night came at a crucial moment in the game as well. Trailing by just 10 points with over seven minutes to play, Louisiana-Lafayette drove all the way to the A-State 33 yard line before Brown came up with a fourth-down tackle of running back Elijah McGuire to preserve the Red Wolves’ lead.
This season, Brown is currently leads all A-State defense players with three interceptions, tied for second most in the Sun Belt. He is also tied for second on the team with 30 total tackles and leads the team with six pass breakups. The 6-foot-2, 204-pounc Communications Studies major has also helped the Red Wolves compile a nation leading 15 interceptions on the year, three of which of have been returned for touchdowns, a mark that ranks second nationally.
